Map polygons only symbolize an area where a particular system has reported the existence of the system's water lines and do not represent legal boundaries. The polygon coverage is part of the "Rural Water Systems in Oklahoma" atlas produced by the Oklahoma Water Resources Board. This GIS layer is an update to the 1995 data set. In order to obtain attribute information about the Rural Water Systems, the RWS_Info.dbf file must be joined to the RWS_Boundaries.dbf file using PWSID as the common field. The goal of the project is to recompose an up-to-date comprehensive inventory of rural water systems and to facilitate better management of Oklahoma's rural water resources through utilization of GIS technology for data management and manipulation. Map data from each system were drafted onto the appropriate county base map at a scale of 1:63,360, then transferred from paper media to a mylar base map at an identical scale. Spatial data were digitized and converted into ARCINFO coverages. Non-spatial descriptive data describing characteristics of each rural water district were stored in an INFORMIX database. This data was joined to the spatial data by creating a JOIN between the RWS_POLY.pat table and the RWDMAN.dbf table. Once all data layers were developed, the entire dataset was pulled into ArcView for viewing and manipulation.
